It has been said that the heart cannot rejoice in what the mind rejects. This is certainly true for the skeptic who struggles with Christianity. However, it is also true for the believer who struggles with personal doubts or who fears being asked the really "tough" questions.
It has been said that the heart cannot rejoice in what the mind rejects
The solution is simple: Exercise your freedom in Christ and seek for real answers—become an Apologists yourself! The Scriptures tell us to seek after God not only with our heart and soul, but with our mind as well (Matthew 22:37). The Bible never encourages us to commit intellectual suicide.
One of the purposes of Quest Ministries is to provide Christians with solid and persuasive Biblical and philosophical answers to the tough questions that are being asked in our culture today. We have discovered that the end result will be a new sense of confidence and competence to communicate the eternal message of Jesus Christ.
F.R. Beattie did a good job of describing the essence of apologetics when he said:
"Christianity is either EVERYTHING for mankind or NOTHING. It is either the highest certainty or the greatest delusion.... But if Christianity be EVERYTHING for mankind, it is important for every man to be able to give a good reason for the hope that is in him in regard to the eternal truths of the Christian faith. To accept these truths in an unthinkable way, or to receive them simply on authority, is not enough for an intelligent and stable faith". F.R. Beattie, 1903
In the Bible, apologetics is the defending of the truth of Scripture with the evidence revealed in creation, the nature of man, in history, in eyewitness accounts, and in the use of logic and reason. The Greek word "apologia" appears eight times in the New Testament (Acts 22:1; 25:16; 1 Cor. 9:3; 2 Cor. 7:11; 2 Tim. 4:16; Phil. 1:7, 16; 1 Peter 3:15). The word means a verbal defense or a speech in defense; it is sometimes translated "answer." As followers of Christ, the New Testament writers encourage us to be able to give a defense for the hope that is in us. Peter said it best in this verse:
"Always be prepared to make a ‘defense’ to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence".1 Peter 3:15 NIV
In our culture today, persuasion is often looked down upon when it come to religion. In contrast, the writers of the New Testament were constantly challenging the readers to think and to use their minds. Even the classical definition of faith in the Bible points us to the evidence that we are called upon to consider. In Hebrews 11:1 the author says:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (NKJV)
We believe that God is truth and that when we respond correctly to truth; He is glorified and honored. Therefore, Quest Ministries is committed to identifying the evidence and equipping believers to communicate these eternal truths in a winsome and persuasive way.
